Who is Europe’s most consistently innovative law firm?

The beginning of the new year is when everyone at RSG Consulting and the FT starts to think about the themes and contents for this year’s European Innovative Lawyers Report. But before we get too immersed in legal trends and innovation forecasting, we thought it would be interesting to look back at the firms who have been the most consistent performers since 2007, when the FT Law 50 began ranking firms on the basis of – amongst other things – their overall performance in the Report.

…a tie between ALLEN & OVERY and CLIFFORD CHANCE.

The above table is an aggregation of each firms’ position in the FT Law 50 between 2007 and 2010. The top of the table positions are taken up by the firms who consistently remain at the top of the FT index.

The magic circle firms’ account for four of the top five positions and all of the top ten firms have their headquarters in the UK (though each of them have considerable operations in Europe and further afield).

No one firm has taken home the award for ‘Most Innovative Law Firm’ more than once. Nor is the top spot the sole preserve of the UK’s magic circle firms, after Eversheds won the latest award in 2010. Moreover, a gaze further down the table (not included above), would show that half of the next six firms outside of the top ten are non-UK firms, coming from Romania, Spain and the US respectively.

On that basis it is all to play for in Europe in 2011, when the FT Law 50 ranking will be five years’ old.
